The demand from telcos, service providers, software vendors, enterprises and end-users in cost-effective transcoding is caused by the continuing competition between Google, which pushes hard for its VP8/VP9 video codec on one side, and Microsoft, Apple and Cisco and other telcos that use the H.264 standard on the other. There is also no seamless interoperability between different HD VoIP software products that use different HD voice codecs.
